By Origin:

  • Domestic: 97.1K products approved over the L12M (+8.2% vs. last year) and 21.2K over the L3M (+2.2% vs. last year)
  • Imports: 81.7K products approved over the L12M (+11.6% vs. last year) and 18.3K over the L3M (–0.8% vs. last year)

Beer, Spirits, & Wine – Packaged Imports Grow +20% By Value L12M through October 2021, Packaged Exports Grow +8%

Total Beverage Alcohol:

  • Total beverage alcohol imports (including bulk and packaged) grew +18% by value over the last twelve months and grew +7% by value over the last three months. 35% of all imported beverage alcohol by value came from Mexico over the last twelve months.

  • Total beverage alcohol exports (included bulk and packaged) grew +4% by value over the last twelve months and grew +9% by value over the last three months. 28% of all exported beverage alcohol by value went to Canada over the last twelve months.

Each of the bw166 Import and Export Reports (for Beer, Spirits, and Wine) enable tracking Beverage Alcohol imports and exports on a monthly basis for volume, value in USD, and value in local currency for all major trading countries.

Beer:

  • Imported beer grew +13% by volume and grew +16% by value over the last twelve months. Over the last three months, imports declined -1% by volume and grew +1% by value. 75% of imported beer by value comes from Mexico.
  • Exported beer grew +20% by volume and grew +62% by value over the last twelve months. Over the last three months, exports grew +11% by volume and grew +22% by value. 25% of exported beer by value goes to Chile.

  • Imported packaged spirits for the last twelve months grew +16% by volume and grew +21% by value. Over the last three months, volumes declined -1% and grew +8% by value.
  • Imported bulk spirits for the last twelve months declined -7% by volume and declined -16% by value. Over the last three months, volumes declined -22% and declined -29% by value.
  • 35% of all imported packaged spirits by value arrived from Mexico while 31% of all imported bulk spirits by value arrived from Brazil.
  • Exported packaged spirits for the last twelve months grew +4% by volume and declined -16% by value. Over the last three months, volumes grew +10% and declined -5% by value.
  • Exported bulk spirits for the last twelve months declined -2% by volume and grew +4% by value. Over the last three months, volumes grew +7% and grew +17% by value.
  • 19% of all exported packaged spirits by value is destined for Canada while 33% of all exported bulk spirits by value is destined for Canada.

  • 35% of all imported packaged wine by value arrived from Italy while 21% of all imported bulk wine by value arrived from France.
  • Exported packaged wine for the last twelve months grew +15% by volume and grew +19% by value. Over the last three months, volumes grew +14% and grew +20% by value.
  • Exported bulk wine for the last twelve months declined -22% by volume and declined -25% by value. Over the last three months, volumes declined -35% and declined -46% by value.
  • 40% of all exported packaged wine by value is destined for Canada while 56% of all exported bulk wine by value is destined for the United Kingdom.

Line Extensions and New Entrants Continue to Expand the ABA Product Space

We recently looked through the latest new product approvals from the TTB using our Label Inquiry tool and wanted to highlight some interesting approvals over the last month in the ABA space:

New Product Labels

  • High Noon Sun Sips received approvals for two new flavors Guava (9/4/2021) and Lemon (10/8/2021)
  • Nutrl Vodka Seltzer flavor extension: Cranberry Apple (9/16/2021)
  • Hornitos Tequila Seltzer flavor extensions: Black Cherry (10/4/2021) and Peach (9/15/2021)
  • Barefoot Bubbly line extensions of Fruitscato flavors: Peach and Blackberry (both 9/13/2021)
  • Bota Box is also entering the space with Bota’rita in Strawberry (9/27/2021) and Lime (10/8/2021) – both 1.5L premixed wine cocktails at 13.5% ABV

Two other interesting product approvals:

New Product Labels

  • Joel Gott looks to be moving into a more premium price point with the approval of a Napa Valley appellated Cab under the label Gott (9/24/2021)
  • Modelo expanding with Modelo Oro, a 90-calorie light beer at 4.2% ABV (9/29/2021)
