Jon Moramarco, the managing partner of BW 166 LLC, has been in the wine business his entire life. He has operated as a CEO of various wine companies for seventeen years with net sales spanning from $50 Million to over $1 Billion. Nine years of his CEO tenure was with companies focused on super premium to luxury wines. The other eight years involved companies with portfolios across many price points and categories in the wine business. He has had operational responsibility for wineries from 5,000 case capacity to well over 10 million cases. His responsibilities have also included wineries and wine companies in many of the major wine producing countries of the world.
Our name, BW 166 LLC, recognizes Jon’s family roots in the California wine business. Giuseppe Moramarco, Jon’s grandfather, acquired Bonded Winery 166 from the Jesuits during Prohibition. This winery was known as ”California Mission Vintage Company” and was located in downtown Los Angeles near the current site of the Union Depot. Giuseppe had immigrated to the USA from Italy and was the 10th generation of his family to be involved in the wine business. While our name recognizes this heritage it is also a reminder that the wine business is constantly changing. It is not that long ago that there were more vineyards in Southern California than existed north of the Tehachapis, or that dessert wines outsold table wines in the United States. Likewise it is good to remember that the wine industry, along with beer and spirits, is the only industry in the United States to be subject to two Constitutional Amendments. As an industry we need to continually adapt to our changing environment.
